Presenter:      Kenlana Ferguson, PhD, LP, Director of Kalamazoo College Counseling Center

Topic:             "What are Microaggressions?"

What are racial microaggressions? Microaggressions are commonplace verbal or behavior indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, which communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults that target a person or group of people (Sue, 2004). Microaggressions result in harmful psychological consequences, create disparities (Kessler, Mickelson & Williams, 1999; Pascoe, Smart, Richman, 2009) and marginalize people of color. The main objective of this program is raise awareness of microaggressions and how they impact daily interactions with people of color. Strategies for addressing microaggressions will be discussed for the purpose of helping participants learn ways to foster inclusivity in their personal and professional lives.

Learning Outcome:

  • Attendees will have increased awareness of microaggressions.
  • Attendees will learn how microaggressions marginalize people of color.
  • Attendees will learn ways to address microaggressions and foster inclusivity in their personal and professional lives.
