DESCRIPTION:

This presentation will explain (1) why a self-funded health is a viable alternative to fully-insured health plans even for small and medium sized employers, (2) identify the basics of how self-funded plans are structured as compared to fully-insured health plan (including plan design, the health benefits available to employees, plan administration, and stop-loss insurance to cover risk), and (3) discuss the reasons self-funded plans can reduce health plan costs relative to both the risk component (i.e., the health benefits) and the administrative component of the plan.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of the webinar, HR professionals will have a basic understanding of: (1) fundamentals of self-funded plans as they compare to fully insured plans, and (2) how and why self-funded plans offer the potential for reducing healthcare benefits costs while managing risk; including the following specifics of self-funded plans:

  • Overview of regulatory requirements (e.g., PPACA) as applied to self-funded health plans as compared to fully-insured health plans
  • The basic structure for managing a self-funded plan (who does what)
    • Employer's role
    • HR's role
    • Third party administrator's role
    • Employee's role
    • Stop loss insurance
  •  How and why self-funded plans can reduce health plan costs as to benefits and administration

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

 

Anthony S. Hart III, Attorney at Law is a member of Detroit SHRM’s legal affairs committee. He has represented private sector, tax-exempt and governmental employers in a variety of employee benefits maters. He has counseled clients regarding the design and implementation of employee benefit plans and tax, labor and PBGC compliance matters relating to such plans, (including audits or other governmental involvement by the IRS, DOL and PBGC). He has extensive experience in tax controversies relating to retirement plan errors, having counseled numerous clients on correcting document and operational problems that threaten the qualification of a plan.

                                                                                                                       

Andrew Dutka CEBS began his career in 1989 designing employee welfare and pension plans for Guardian Life Insurance Co. of America. Today, Andrew is a senior consultant and partner for AmeriSource LLC, a highly specialized Human Resource Management consulting firm. In 2007 Andrew founded and developed “Managing Life’s Risks™”, an employee training program that teaches accountability and responsibility inside the workforce.

Andrew is known in the employee benefits community for his work in designing successful human resource management programs for small to medium sized organizations, (those companies employing less than 1,000 people). AmeriSource continues to develop innovative employee benefit plans and processes for small and medium sized businesses. Today he is responsible for the benefit plan designs covering over 6,000 employees in 3 states and office locations in Northville, Michigan and Orlando, Florida.
