Michigan’s Newly Enacted Wage & Hour and Paid Leave Acts and Federal Law Update

This webinar will provide participants with a primer of newly enacted requirements under Michigan’s Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act and Paid Medical Leave Act and their impact on employers and unions, and the presenter will also review key developments under the parallel Federal statutes. Participants will also be provided with a systematic overview of newly enacted rights and responsibilities of employers, employees, and unions under Michigan’s paid leave and minimum wage statutes and a review of key developments under the FLSA minimum wage provisions and the Family and Medical Leave Act.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Julia Turner Baumhart is a Partner with Kienbaum Hardy Viviano Pelton & Forrest, P.L.C. Over the past 25 years, Ms. Baumhart has represented employers of all sizes, including many Fortune 500 employers, in disputes at the trial and appellate levels. Ms. Baumhart’s client base has spanned the automotive, publishing, technology, hospitality, education, oil and pipeline, entertainment, media, finance, retail, insurance, and other industry sectors, and has encompassed all areas of employment law. She has successfully defended employers in class actions and pattern-and-practice cases, as well as in single-plaintiff litigation. Prior to joining Kienbaum Hardy Viviano Pelton & Forrest, Ms. Baumhart was a Partner with predecessor firm Kienbaum Opperwall Hardy & Pelton since its inception in 1997; an employment law associate with the Detroit-based Dickinson Wright law firm; a judicial clerk to Judge James L. Ryan of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit; and Employment Litigation Coordinator and Employee Relations Manager for EDS.
Ms. Baumhart earned her Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Texas at Austin. She graduated magna cum laude from the Wayne State University Law School, where she received numerous awards for writing and scholarship, including the Order of the Coif. A frequent speaker at employment law seminars, Ms. Baumhart has published on affirmative action and OFCCP audits, performance appraisals, employer access to employee email, and other workplace issues. Ms. Baumhart is “AV” peer-rated by Martindale-Hubbell and was named by dbusiness magazine as a Top Lawyer in employment litigation. She is a member of the American Bar Association’s Labor & Employment and Litigation Sections, the State Bar of Michigan’s Labor & Employment Section, Detroit SHRM’s Legal Affairs Committee, and the Oakland County Bar Association, where she serves as a case evaluator for employment cases. She is also an Oakland County Bar Foundation Charter Fellow.
