"Why 90% of Companies Fail at Change Efforts & How You Can be in the Top 10%"

Presented by:  George "Chip" Pickett, former VP at Northrop Grumman Corporation, Consultant to Department of Defense and companies on Strategy, Change, and Government Budgeting

Most efforts at major innovations or changes fail.  Various studies and cases indicate failure rates approaching 90%.  Failures often come not from poor ideas but from mistakes in implementation.

In the past thirty years, innovation and change have received increasing attention in the United States due to many factors.  Rates of change in products and markets have increased.  Industrial capabilities have spread among more nations, and increased the range of potential competitors.  New ideas for how to distribute and sell products have widened the range of competitive strategies.  Major innovations in technologies now come from a wider array of places than just the U.S.

A number of theories, concepts and frameworks have appeared that analyze innovation and change.  At the broadest level these have explored the role of economies, cultures, geographies, technologies, and government policies.  At a more specific level they have focused on issues such as organizational behavior, people skills, financial objectives, market positions, and the effects of established facilities and past investments.

Some research has focused at an even more detailed level.  What actions are actually taken by people attempting to implement innovations or major change?  Is there a common set of actions that people take, regardless of the type of firm or agency is involved?  In other words, “what should one do to make a change occur?”

Implementing major change is a process over time.  It thus requires constant attention to taking actions that support achieving success.  This presentation will focus on identifying the common set of actions that are characteristic of successful major change.
